Fantasy Observation

I have pointed out already the carceral nature of the sports statistic, particularly with regards to its hierarchical and categorical nature. I have also ruminated on the nature of "position" in fantasy sports.

It is interesting that athletes may accumulate additional value, in a fantasy gaming sense, if they are able to play multiple positions and thus earn points for an owner in a variety of ways. That is, there is a positive benefit in being able to transcend the functional category of "position."

A Nuanced Line of Questioning

Great article by Amateur over at Now THAT's Amateur:

Is anti-doping "police" work the kind that strikes preemptively and recklessly, assumes guilt, and uses any means necessary to enforce the rules? Or is it the kind that requires conclusive evidence of guilt and respects the rights of the innocent above all else?

Important questions to be asked. But I am most interested here in aesthetics: the way that Amateur, in articulating his thesis, eschewed the usual graph in favour of a CSI / 24 remix.

The Department of Biological Flow

With regard to the information, images and identities that are the byproducts of the sportocratic uncertainty-of-outcome process, one becomes less concerned with the carceral nature of their manufacturing in favour of their flow within and from the enclosure of the sportscape.

This is not the flow of the river that erodes a path through a sandy bed over time, however, but rather the flow of the canal: man-made vector for the fluid transmission of communication: from simulation to coach to athlete to teammate; from referee to scorer to scoreboard to television screen; from boxscore to newswire agency to editor to teleprompter; from handicap to spread to parlay to vigorish; from statistic to programmer to model to simulation.

Sprint / Race

Jesse Owens: dimpled, smiling, clutch; wins four gold medals at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin; deals a blow to Hitler's Aryan supremacy.

Ben Johnson: wins 100m World Championship in 1987 in world record time; tested positive for stanozolol; once known as the Fastest Man Alive.

While each took different paths in their running careers, both returned home to entertain the masses by racing against horses and automobiles.

"It is obvious today that the genetic code must be considered the most fundamental of all the semiotic networks, and therefore a prototype of all the other systems of signaling that animals use, man included." — Sebeok, quoted by Baudrillard, in Simulations

"Supporting the launch, Jordan debuts a visually stunning television spot called '2nd Generation', created by Wieden+Kennedy New York. The commercial introduces the Air Jordan XXI and pays true testament to Michael Jordan's legacy through a moving re-creation of his most famous career highlights performed by young basketball players, illustrating how his influence will continue to impact generations from the past as well as generations to come. In addition, visually stunning 'DNA-themed' imagery of the Air Jordan XXI also appear in outdoor, print and online venues." — Nike

Coincidentally, there are 23 pairs of chromosomes in the human body.

"Re-create" should read replicate.

The 500-year plan continues.
