From Adam's Rib

The football fan is treated to two sets of ribs at an NFL game: one is served on parking-lot barbecues at pre-game tailgate parties, and the other is served inside the stadium on the exposed midriffs of the team cheerleaders. The first serves to fatten the football masses, while devouring the second mocks that very fatness under a guise of sexual fantasy.

Cheerleaders never would have made sense in the times of the Roman gladiator games. While today's cloned "beauties" provide a perfect side-dish of simulated sex to the entree of simulated death on the gridiron, only a full-blown orgy on the fringes of the Colosseum floor would have been an appropriate complement to the brutality of those Games of Death.
